Dr. Lawrence W. Norton in MASKED AND GOWNED, The Making of a Surgeon, recounts stories of his experiences from admission to medical school through a decade of post-graduate surgical training with humor, knowledge and compassion. Along the way he introduces the reader to such colorful characters as demanding medical professors and surgical bosses to indigent patients, who frequented general hospitals' emergency rooms. Balancing professional commitment with the needs of his wife and three small daughters, he describes sacrifices and joys in becoming a well-trained surgeon. Dr. Lawrence W. Norton graduated from Colgate University and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University. After interning at the Cincinnati General Hospital, he trained as a surgical resident in the University of Colorado and the University of Kentucky. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery. In 1964, Dr. Norton took his wife and three young daughters to Northeast India to serve five years as a medical missionary. Thereafter, he entered academic surgery and became a professor at the University of Arizona and, later, at the University of Colorado. Since his retirement he has traveled extensively with his wife, Ann, in developing countries as a Visiting Professor in medical schools, a lecturer in medical conferences and a volunteer surgeon in mission hospitals. The couple resides in Colorado where they enjoy their eight grandchildren, singing, sailing, mountain sports and travel.
