Mattie Styles is a young African American woman who lives in a rural part of Mississippi, who is endowed with a paranormal gift. She is inundated with prophetic depictions of heaven as well as frightening similes of hell and torment. This quick witted teenager lives in a time when her primary focus should be caring for her challenging mother, and their survival during this difficult era, but added to the complexity of her life is the powerful "Call" on her life. Mattie wrestles with normalcy and desires to live separated from her gift. Mattie meets and falls in love with a handsome Cajun, named Jedidiah Paul, but when she discovers that his life appears will have a violent end, she withdraws from love and life. However, Jet's love for Mattie inserts hope into her spirit before she can be totally derailed by her calling. Mattie's battles are personal and spiritual as she discovers another woman, by the name of Pauline is interested in Jedidiah and is determined to have him at any cost. Mattie has to see Pauline as the victim from a horrific past instead of a maniacal enemy bent on destroying Mattie and the one she loves. Mattie is summoned to a spiritual table where she sits and chats with the "Master Builder" Himself who reiterates the urgency of the God-given message she carries. He warns that His coming is soon. He challenges Mattie to continue spreading the message of His love, forgiveness and deliverance from the pain of the past while exonerating her from the responsibility of having to convince the recipients of the message that it's Originator is authentic.
