Emperor Maximilian I (1486/93-1519) ruled the Holy Roman Empire more than thirty decisive years from the war on the Burgundian heritage to the reformation. With his policies of war and marriage, Emperor Maximilian I laid the foundations upon which the Habsburgs rose to become a great European power. "Maximilian's world" appears as a world of transition, between the middle ages and the modern age, between tradition and innovation. His palace was a fascinating centre of modernisation and attracted scholars and artists. Here, influenced by knighthood and Renaissance subtle works of memorial like the novel "Weißkunig" ("The White King"), "Das Ambraser Heldenbuch" ("The Ambras Castle Book of Heroes") or Albrecht Dürer's "Ehrenpforte" ("The Triumphal Arch") were created. The volume unfolds a wide range of the reign of Maximilian I and concerns itself with the subjects of culture, memorial, foreign policy and war as well as domestic policy and constitution.
