The May Revolution was the starting point of the Argentine War of Independence, but without a formal declaration of independence. The Primera Junta did not recognize the authority of the Regency Counsel of Spain and Indies, but still ruled in the name of the Spanish King Ferdinand VII, deposed by the abdications of Bayonne and replaced by the French Joseph Bonaparte, brother of the French emperorNapoleon.
