The problem of alcoholism is evidenced in the effects of this drug which, besides causing social complications, can produce organic, mental and spiritual consequences. The problems arising from the abusive use of alcohol can produce several easily observable effects in people's daily lives. Aiming at understanding the alcoholic being, we seek theoretical support in Existential Analysis because it is linked to phenomenological understanding precepts and has the concern with the meaning of the being. The place of accomplishment was in a Center of Psycho-social Attention Alcohol and other Drugs - CAPSad, located in the city of Fortaleza-CE. Eight subjects participated in the study, meeting the criteria of data saturation. The empirical material was produced from September to October 2012, with an interview, using a script containing questions related to personal and socio-demographic aspects and a guiding question: What is it for you to be an alcoholic? The comprehensive analysis - phenomenological propitiated the approach of the experience of the subjects and favored the understanding of the phenomenon under study.
