The purpose of this book is to develop and
critically examine the relationship between
brownfields regeneration and remediation projects
and the achievement of environmental and socio-
economic benefits, adopting a sustainable
development perspective. The rationale underpinning
this research is that a sustainable environment
cannot be achieved without re-integrating
brownfields sites into the natural environment and
their social and economic systems, thus recovering
the natural functions of the soil together with the
economic role of the site. Specifically, this book
examines and values the public health benefits for a
reduction of the risk of dying due to exposure to
hazardous substances for people living near
contaminated sites in Italy. An original
contribution of this work is the estimation of the
value of statistical life for the Italian
population, that is, the rate at which individuals
are prepared to give up a fraction of their income
in exchange for a reduction in a fatality risk. The
VSL is an important factor in assessing health
benefits of a given environmental policy.
