The book analyses preceptorship from the perspective of doctors in the emergency department of a teaching hospital in Goiânia (GO). This was a qualitative study in which 15 doctors took part between January and March 2013, using semi-structured interviews. The thematic content analysis technique was used. Being a preceptor means transmitting knowledge and taking responsibility for professional training. Discussions of clinical and surgical cases were the most frequently mentioned activities. Preceptorship is fundamental to the teaching-learning process and has contributed to the preceptor continuing to learn. Facilities included good multi-professional relationships, student interest and good theoretical training; difficulties included lack of infrastructure and time, poor communication between teachers and preceptors, and lack of training. The conclusion was that preceptorship contributed to the training of future professionals and that they faced many difficulties in exercising this role, suggesting improvements in infrastructure, working conditions and training. This book is aimed at students, preceptors, teachers, managers of higher education institutions and health services.
