As a 15-year-old orphan-the only survivor of his family-he was forced to negotiate the dangerous, pell-mell landscape of post-war Europe to reach the shores of the United States. As a 17-year-old immigrant to New York City-who didn't speak a word of English-he slowly rebuilt his life, becoming a Rabbi in small cities, starting a family, and working as a businessman in Los Angeles.
