Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, also known as Mother Alphonsa, was an American writer and religious leader, born on May 20, 1851, to the illustrious novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne and his wife, Sophia Peabody Hawthorne. Raised in a milieu abundant with intellectual and artistic stimulus, Rose inherited a rich literary legacy that would later resonate in her own writings. Following her marriage to author George Parsons Lathrop and the tragic death of their only child, Rose's life took a profound spiritual turn. This transformation ultimately led her to profess vows as a Dominican nun, dedicating her life to the care of cancer patients, and she became the foundress of the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne.
