The metabolic disorder affects more than 50 million Indians - 7.1% of the nation's adults - and kills about 1 million Indians a year. The average age of onset is 42.5 years. The high incidence is attributed to a combination of genetic susceptibility and adoption of a high-calorie, low-activity lifestyle of India's growing middle class. (Chan et al., 2009). The importance of psychological, behavioral, and social factors in diabetes have been accumulating for many years, and the role of the Mental health expert in diabetes care has expanded accordingly.
