The last 60 years have witnessed an unbelievable amount of change in restorative dentistry.To examine the present stage of the restorations development requires an appreciation of the allied sciences which have contributed and continue to contribute to its evolution. Physics, chemistry, engineering and the material sciences have all helped to rationalize our approach to metal ceramic restorations. The laws and principles of these allied sciences have greatly aided the quest for predictability. The unsurpassed aesthetic, mechanical and biocompatible qualities of metal ceramic restorations still provide the stimulus to seek methods to overcome their minimal limitations.
