Copied by the monks in the year 367 of the first Christian monastery, the Gospels of Thomas, Philip and Truth, were carefully sealed in ballot boxes and hidden among the rocks, along with other manuscripts in a place near the modern town of Nag Hammadi in Upper Nile Valley, where they remained for nearly 1600 years until in December 1945 were discovered by two Egyptian peasants. At the time of the establishment of the New Testament canon, these three gospels were not known by any of the Christian traditions, for never were mentioned during their lengthy deliberations.
