The book is a venture to analyze the fictional discourse by snatching attention to the metaphorical composition of the text of the novel. For that some selective novels by Anita Desai have been selected and focused on the role of the structural and thematic aspects of discourse in understanding the nature and functions of conceptual metaphor. In literary discourse metaphor has been a very significant linguistic aspect that appears to be a special kind of communication. The organization of the linguistic and non-linguistic aspects of metaphorical discourse has been investigated in terms of cohesive devices, intra-textual coherence, presupposition and entailment. Further it delves into the significance of the socio-cultural elements such as familial, social and locale aspects that contribute to the metaphorical discourse. All these components in symphony have the bases of the society projected in the novels as a replica of real life. This approach would certainly be a characteristic study of the fiction and even applicable to the rest of the genres of literature. As a result of it reading of the novel can be peeping into the literary text by searching deep at a meta-linguistic level.
