The researcher reckoned the possibility of metaphorical approach in utilizing root forms to create painting compositions. He carried out studio experiments with Cassia tora root forms in the light of element and principles of design, as well as speculative notions, allegories and stories. This led to the production of non-figurative paintings. The final procedure was the contextual analogous process which aided the researcher in juxtaposing Cassia tora root forms with storylines commenting on societal happenings and the well-being of Nigerians. The paintings produced redefine root forms in diverse ways, as metaphors for inspiration, hope, fashion trends, peace, love, progress and cultural evolution. The study creates not only visual metaphors that express hope for a utopian world but also visual symbols that transcend the phenomena of roots beyond their botanical garden into icons of artistic expression.

Dr Stephen Chinedu Achugwo holds PhD and M.F.A. degrees in Painting at the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. He earlier trained at the University of Nigeria Nsukka with a B.A. in Graphic Design.
