ABOUT THE AUTHOR MIROSLAV KRLE¿A Miroslav Krle¿a, is the most prominent figure in modern Croatian literature. He was born in 1893 in Zagreb, then the part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He enrolled at the Austro-Hungarian military academy in Budapest. Having been inspired with the ideas of unification of southern Slavs, he was demoted and sent to the Galician trenches as a common soldier in WW l. The trench warfare haunted him and left deep scars evident in his work. A man of rugged, powerful intellect and extensive knowledge. ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR IVICA VLAHOVIC As a student he played the part of captain in a truncated performance of the Twelfth Night by Shakespeare. The action supposedly takes place in Illyria, present-day Zadar. He saw the play Michelangelo Buonarroti in a disused church in Zadar. Vlahovic has completed a BA at the University of Zadar, Croatia, and a BSc. at the Open University, UK.
