Ceramic products are made from natural or synthetic
raw materials and generally characterized by their
high hardness and melting point combined with low
toughness and resistance to fracture. They are the
combination of complex oxides and silicates, also
useful carbide, nitride, and boride ceramics are
produced. One of the popular applications of ceramics
are crucibles, vital materials used in the
scientific research for melting different types of
solid samples at varying high temperatures. This book
mainly addresses the investigations on the
thermodynamic compatibility and speed of manufacture
of the potential crucible materials which can be
produced in-house and considers their use in
corrosion testing of frit furnace refractories and
interactions with frit melts. Dense alumina and
zirconia crucibles are manufactured in the laboratory
by slip casting and tested for their resistance to
corrosive attack by opaque and transparent frits.
Microstructural analysis of the surfaces and/or
interfaces are achieved by the use of principle
methods of characterization including diffraction,
light and electron microscopy as well as other
analytical techniques.
