Prior to joining Congress Capuano served as Mayor and Alderman of Somerville. Capuano ran in the Democratic primary special election to fill the seat in the United States Senate made vacant by the death of Senator Ted Kennedy, but lost to Martha Coakley, who in turn lost the general election to Republican Scott Brown.
