"British Intelligence and the Arab Revolt" closely focuses on the organization, activities and influence of British intelligence officers in Cairo, who assumed unorthodox and unprecedented responsibilities as contributors to policy formation for the Anglo-Arab alliance during the Arab Revolt. Previous histories for this theatre have tended to focus on the activities of individual figures - such as T. E. Lawrence - while failing to place the actions of the wider British intelligence, civil and military community into the regional context of intelligence activity. This new work emphasizes the role of political as well as military intelligence in shaping Egypt's strategic outlook regarding the Arab territories. It examines in detail the intelligence which led to the emergence of political principles for the region, and tracks the tactical and topographical intelligence which framed the authorities' larger debate over campaign policy.
This book examines the use and exploitation of intelligence in formulating Britain's strategy for the Arab Revolt during the First World War. It also presents a radical re-examination of the achievements of T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) as an intelligence officer and guerrilla leader.
