The ADF is a Ugandan rebel group that emerged from tensions within the Ugandan Muslim community. In the early 1990s, members of the Tabligh sect clashed with the Supreme Islamic Council over the leadership of a mosque in Kampala. Following this dispute, Jamil Mukulu and several other Tabligh leaders were arrested. After their release in 1993, they began to mobilize an army in the west of the country (Uganda), with the support of the Sudanese government, in response to Kampala's support for the rebellion of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA). ). From 1995, the ADF established themselves in the Congolese part of the Ruwenzori massif in the province of North Kivu.
