The discipline of military psychology involves the systematic and scientific study of the selection, training, adaptation, and performance of soldiers. Military psychology, by necessity, is a heterogeneous field of inquiry. On the one hand, it draws on all subdisciplines of psychology to understand the variables that affect soldier performance while on the other hand, lessons learned from military psychology are of vital importance to all areas of psychology.

The purpose of this collection of readings is to capture significant developments from military psychology that are of general interest and importance to all psychologists and to promote understanding in human behaviour in challenging contexts.

Volume One: Selection, Training and Performance captures significant advances in how soldiers are selected, assigned, and trained.

Volume Two: Applied Experimental and Engineering Psychology includes topics of human factors engineering, cognitive engineering, ergonomics, situational awareness and soldier performance.

Volume Three: Stress and Resilience focuses on classic and contemporary studies of combat stress and its consequences.

Volume Four: Leadership, Culture and Morale advances the understanding of leading people in the contexts of dangerous environments.

Autorenporträt
Michael D. Matthews is Professor of Engineering Psychology at the United States Military Academy. He is a former Air Force officer with tours of duty at the U.S. Air Force Human Resources Laboratory and as a faculty member at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Professor Matthews was selected as a Templeton Foundation Positive Psychology Fellow and much of his research focuses on applying Positive Psychology principles to military contexts. He is on the science advisory board for the Military Child Education Coalition, and served as President of the American Psychological Association′s Division of Military Psychology from 2007 to 2008. Collectively, his research interests focus on soldier performance in combat and other dangerous contexts. Janice H. Laurence is currently an Associate Professor within Temple University′s Adult and Organizational Development Program in the Psychological Studies in Education Department of the College of Education. Previously, she served as the Director of Human Resource Development for the Army′s new initiative, the Human Terrain System (HTS). Professor Laurence has 30 years of experience designing, conducting and managing policy studies and applied research and analysis related to performance assessment, leadership, organizational development, needs assessment and general workforce and human capital analyses particularly in the military setting. She is the past editor (and current associate editor) of Military Psychology.
