The objective of this work is to understand how innovation in government was developed in Minas Gerais since its institutionalized inception in a government decree in 2003, and what the main challenges faced by the theme and its responsible in the state, the Central Superintendence of Innovation and Institutional Modernization of the State Secretariat of Planning and Management of Minas Gerais, as well as good practices and lessons learned in the initiatives and projects carried out in the last 17 years. To this end, a literature review was carried out, an exploratory research, in official documents and internal reports of the sector, and a semi-structured interview with nine civil servants or former civil servants from Scim. It was concluded that, although innovation in government has brought assertive results in recent years for the state apparatus, the main challenges faced by the theme in Minas Gerais are related to the lack of budget, low sponsorship from top management or organizational culture not very conducive to innovative servers.
