Uptake of these elements by the plants from the soil is governed by their contents in soil, soil pH, and concentration of organic matter, soil texture, and application of fertilizers, soil type, temperature and rainfall. These factors have led to a great variation in mineral contents in soil, feeds, fodders and grains. Deficiency or toxicity of minerals causing economic losses, with introduction of high yielding varieties, intensive cultivation and uses of high analysis fertilizers, there is a continuous depletion of all essential plant nutrients from the soils. Therefore, regular monitoring of soil and plant samples for mineral nutrients and mineral mixture supplementation for livestock and poultry feeding is essential.

A autora Yasothai Ramalingam nasceu em 14.06.1975. Obteve a licenciatura (2000), o mestrado (2002) e o doutoramento (2013) na Universidade de Ciências Veterinárias e Animais de Tamilnadu, Chennai. Actualmente, trabalha como Professora Assistente no Centro de Formação e Investigação da Universidade de Veterinária, TANUVAS, Erode, Tamilnadu, Índia. Escreveu muitos artigos de investigação e livros.
