The term 'Minimally Invasive Dentistry' (MID) was given by Mount and Hume in 1997, referred to the use of smaller and more conservative cavity preparations. But today, the concept is much broader which includes care related to risk assessment of disease, the early detection of oral disease, targeted preventively orientated strategies and limited surgical intervention appropriate to the level of disease. MID is the modern medical approach towards the management of caries mainly focusing on the early prevention and interception of disease rather than only the restoration of teeth and this allows the dentist to achieve maximum intervention, with minimal invasive treatment modalities. It consists of various materials, burs, technologies which completely diverts the whole concept towards the prevention and minimal intervention.
