Al Detter has been involved in the church his entire life. His journey includes the following in chronological order: Mennonite, Brethren in Christ, Independent, Presbyterian, and Baptist. Since 1975, he has been affiliated with Converge, formerly the Baptist General Conference. His church experiences have inspired much of the material for this book.Al grew up in Souderton, Pennsylvania. His college years took him to Moody Bible Institute (B.A.) in Chicago, Illinois, and the University of Illinois Chicago Circle Campus. He went on to Dallas Theological Seminary (Th.M.) in Dallas, Texas, and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (D.Min.) in Deerfield, Illinois.Al met Marie Simmons, from Peoria, Illinois, at Moody. They married in 1970. They have four grown children, three adopted as infants. They have eight grandchildren.Al has served the following churches: Skokie Valley Baptist Church, Wilmette, IL (Youth Pastor); Grace Church, Erie, PA (35 total years, 32 as Senior Pastor); Old North Church, Canfield, OH (Interim); First Baptist Church, New Castle, PA (Interim); Christ Community Church, Fredonia, NY (Interim), and Bethel Baptist Church, Jamestown, NY (Interim).His favorite hobbies include traveling (especially to Israel and the UK), collecting and reading antique books, and driving his 1969 Camaro.Since laughter is a good medicine, he tries to take a good dose every day.
