The possibility of tapping into the non-conventional financial system has been accelerated by contemporary information and telecommunications technology like mobile telephones and mobile network platforms. Therefore, banking the unbanked still remains an attractive business opportunity, especially in emerging and developing regions like South America, Asia and Africa because a great percentage of the population in such regions can afford a mobile phone but not a bank account. Riding on the mobile telephone and network technology, a non-conventional financial system has emerged which does not rely on the traditional banking infrastructure but relies on different platforms in a complex business ecosystem. However, this ecosystem appears to be in a state of flux and presents different business opportunities and challenges that can potentially stimulate emerging and developing economies like Zambia.
