The performance of paper machines at paper mills degrades from time to time. Therefore, the company in charge of designing control systems for paper machines needs to utilize control engineers to figure out the source of the problem. If they notice that the model used in controller design is no longer a valid model to represent the behaviour of the process, they will need to re-identify the process and re-tune the controllers to compensate for the degraded performance. So, I was asked to automate the whole procedure, from performance assessment to closed-loop identification and controller re-tuning. I have tried to conduct my research in the best possible way and make substantial and useful contribution to the work. Moreover, it was a great experience for me to collaborate closely with people in industry and be familiar with industrial environment during my Master's. In this book, I try to share some parts of the things I learnt from them.

Mahdi Yousefi received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering at Amirkabir University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 2012. He received his Master's in Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, BC, in 2014. He started his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering at UBC in 2014.
