The book focuses on two issues related to mathematical and numerical modelling of flow in unsaturated porous media. In the first part numerical solution of the governing equations is discussed, with particular emphasis on the spatial discretization of highly nonlinear permeability coefficient. The second part deals with large scale flow in heterogeneous porous media of binary structure. Upscaled models are developed and it is shown that the presence of material heterogeneities may give rise to additional non-equilibrium terms in the governing equations or to hysteresis in the averaged constitutive relationships.…mehr

Rezensionen
"I enjoyed reading it and I would recommend it to all researchers in this subject area. What I like about this exposition is that theoretical concepts and methods are illustrated with simple examples, linked to laboratory experiments and supplemented by numerical simulations. Another useful feature of this book is that the advantages and disadvantages of each method are clearly explained and potential ways for alleviating the limitations of the method are discussed. ... As a result, the book can be used as standard tutorial for the way various upscaling methods for water flow in unsaturated porous media are applied. This is an authoritative document that promises to become a milestone publication and a standard reference book in modeling water flow in unsaturated porous media systems." (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rainer Helmig, Universität Stuttgart, July 16, 2012)
