Sustainability has a multitude of facets. Transformation research (TR) is examined to formulate some basic conceptions. Thereof, two distinct approaches deriving from TR are introduced and discussed, namely the Multi-Level-Perspective, as well as Technological Innovation Systems. These analyzing tools help to apply its ideas and visions onto current societies. The example of electric vehicle implementation is highlighted on several occasions. Furthermore, similarities and differences of the distinct approaches are closely investigated. The ties of different stakeholders from a broad background show diverse transition and transformation process pathways and lay out the driving forces facilitating transition and transformation. Additionally, difficulties evolving around this topic, as well as the actual sustainability of transitions are elaborated. Eventually, policy mixes are examined to state their influence within both analyzing tools. Intervention points and policy instruments are laid out. The result is an extensive elaboration of sustainability transformation, including policy suggestion to foster and accelerate both sectoral transition and societal transformation.
