A prospective study has been carried out on Malassezia species isolated from pityriasis versicolor patients who attended to the dermatology outpatients department (DOPD) of Al-Sader Teaching Hospital, Al-Basrah Teaching Hospital and Al-Faihaa Hospital in Basra during the period from January 2016 to November 2018. This study was conducted to detect the various Malassezia species isolated from pityriasis versicolor patients by phenotypical and molecular methods with a study of histopathological experimental changes of PV. A total of 95 patients [40 females (42.1%) and 55 males (57.9%)] with pityriasis versicolor were included in the study, their ages ranged between 4 -73 years. From the total number, 85(89.5%) samples were positive for KOH and cultures, while 10(10.5%) samples were negative.
