The CTX-M resistance gene produces Extended Spectrum Beta-lactamase (ESBL) enzymes that are capable of inhibiting the action of broad-spectrum beta-lactam antimicrobials by irreversibly hydroxylating the amide bond of the beta-lactam ring of these antimicrobials.
