This tale of many centers on three men, Tom Doolittle, George Nil, and Bill Blackman. The story encompasses their brief lives before arriving at a juncture in Holbrook, and other Arizona towns, in the 1880s. The story edges into Arizona history with side stories about adjunctive characters, and the communities in which the moment is located. The main characters are destined, it seems throughout the story, to meet in a gun battle. The potential arises out of Doolittle and Nil planning a robbery of a bank in Holbrook. Blackman is a deputy sheriff in the town. Practices of law enforcement of the time come into view in this mixed narrative. The penultimate scene arises and the three fulfill their destinies. Historical moments enhance the story, add life to the times, give the reader the flavor of Arizona, and Holbrook. The tale tells of the "wild west" at its wildest, in the little town of Holbrook which has been called the toughest, wildest town in Arizona, bar none.
