In finding one of the missing persons, concerns arise about the questionable practices of a nearby religious group. The efforts of Nell and the team yield unusual results-including large sums of money-while the Craters claim more victims in dark and mysterious caves, lava tubes, and spatter cones. Leather shields protect Moonshine's paws from a'a lava and abrasive cinders, but physical obstacles as well as secrets and lies, cult trappings, and consuming greed endanger the lives and limbs of all. Whether from accident or intentional injury, the members of the search party struggle to overcome the challenges of this remote and almost inaccessible natural phenomenon. And Nell faces the most serious attempt yet on her sanity and her life.

Julie Weston grew up in Idaho and practiced law for many years in Seattle, Washington. Her book, The Good Times Are All Gone Now: Life, Death and Rebirth in an Idaho Mining Town (University of Oklahoma Press, 2009) won Honorable Mention in the 2009 Idaho Book of the Year Award. She appeared on a C-Span2/Book TV interview in December, 2013. Both an essay and a short story were nominated for Pushcart Prizes. She is the author of the Nellie Burns and Moonshine Mysteries: Moonshadows, a Finalist in the Mary Sarton Literary Awards; Basque Moon, winner of the 2017 WILLA Award in Historical Fiction; Moonscape, Bronze winner of the INDIE Foreword Awards; Miners' Moon, Bronze winner in the Will Rogers Medallion Awards for Mystery; and Moon Bones, published by Encircle Publications in October, 2022.
