Moran is a sailor and works on the Lady Letty, a ship owned by Alice's father. When Alice's father dies, Moran sets out to win her heart and take control of the Lady Letty. However, their journey is fraught with danger as they encounter treacherous weather, pirates, and other obstacles. Along the way, Moran must prove himself as a capable sailor and a worthy suitor to Alice. The novel is a thrilling tale of adventure, romance, and the challenges of life at sea. It is a classic work of American literature that captures the spirit of the turn of the century and the excitement of the open sea.Wilbur had imagined that the fight would be hardly more than a wild rush down the slope of the beach, a dash over the beach- combers' breastworks of sand, and a brief hand-to-hand scrimmage around the old cabin. In all accounts he had ever read of such affairs, and in all ideas he had entertained on the subject, this had always been the case. The two bodies had shocked together like a college rush, there had been five minutes' play of knife and club and gun, a confused whirl of dust and smoke, and all was over before one had time either to think or be afraid. But nothing of the kind happened that morning. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Autorenporträt
Frank Norris (1870-1902) was an American novelist and journalist known for his realistic and naturalistic writing style. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in a family with a strong literary background. Norris studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and later attended Harvard University. Norris is best remembered for his novels that depicted the social issues and struggles of his time. His most notable work is "The Octopus: A Story of California" (1901), a sprawling epic that explores the conflicts between wheat farmers and the powerful railroad monopolies in California. The novel is considered a classic of American literature and is often associated with the naturalist literary movement. Tragically, Norris's writing career was cut short when he died at the age of 32 due to complications from appendicitis. Despite his short life, he left a lasting impact on American literature, influencing later writers such as Upton Sinclair and Theodore Dreiser. His works continue to be celebrated for their realism, vivid portrayals of the human condition, and insightful social commentary.
