Although English is not the medium of instruction in many countries, accessing key information at higher education in a great variety of fields is often dependent on having reading ability in English. Therefore, reading is the most important skill for foreign language learners because they have little contact with the target language outside the classroom, and also most of the information in English comes through reading. In contexts like this, students will get more opportunities to read rather than to listen to English. That is why the main emphasis in most programs of English as a foreign language (EFL) is usually on the written skills especially reading.
