Mount Athos is the principal surviving centre of Orthodox monasticism and the spiritual heart of the Orthodox world. The aims of the conference were to draw attention to the historic importance, the spirituality, and the religious legacy of the Holy Mountain and to shed light on the contribution made by Athonite monasticism not only to worldwide Orthodoxy but also to Christianity at large. Many of the papers focus on particular individuals who from the fourteenth century to the twentieth have exemplified the spiritual traditions of Athos and whose memory as spiritual fathers, confessors, and ascetics continues to inspire their successors today.
Autorenporträt
The Editors: Dimitri Conomos holds a doctorate in musicology from Oxford University and has lectured widely in music history, hymnography, and ecology. He has published on Byzantine and Slavonic chant, hymnody, Orthodoxy, and the environment and mythology.
Graham Speake studied classics at Trinity College, Cambridge, and wrote a doctoral thesis at Christ Church, Oxford, on the Byzantine transmission of ancient Greek literature. He is founder and Secretary of the Friends of Mount Athos, author of Mount Athos: Renewal in Paradise (2002), a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and Peter Lang's Publisher in the UK.
