As the population around the area grew during the last half of the 19th century, more people and community leaders got involved with Mount Spokane. In 1927, the area became a state park. Duane Becker lives with his wife in Elk, Washington, where they raised two children. He has been employed as a professional musician for many years. Duane developed a passion for history and preservation at an early age. Currently, he is the vice president of the Pend Oreille County Historical Society and Museum in Newport, Washington.
