Hamidullah was born in Hyderabad Deccan, and descended from an illustrous family: his great grandfather, Muhammad Ghaws Sharfu l-Mulk (d. 1822), wrote more than 30 books in Arabic, Persian and Urdu, and his maternal grandfather wrote a lot of books too, among them a tafsir. He was the youngest among the three brothers and five sisters, who were all well versed in Arabic, Persian and Urdu, as well as in Islamic learning.
