The number of interracial couples and marriages in America is growing rapidly, with profound consequences for society at large. In light of these changes, librarians should find Multiracial America a welcome addition to their collections. It offers a thorough look at the pressing issues facing interracial couples. Chapters cover such topics as appearance, fitting in, dating, families, and adoptions, all the while providing much needed information to couples struggling to deal with lingering problems of culture and race. The book also contains unique resources, including guidance on teaching a multiracial issues course (with a sample syllabus), help with searching for materials on the topic (which can be challenging, given the changing terminology and classifications), and a compilation of websites. Useful indexes by race and non-print media round out the material.

Rezensionen
This annotated bibliography fills a gap in reference resources...This book does a fine job of fostering awareness of the diversity of resources available: scholarly research and personal accounts, juvenile and adult fiction, a chapter on TV and film, and even a chapter on teaching methods...The chapter on interracial homosexuality is perhaps the most provocative in an already contentious subject area...This book will be most useful for social workers, literature students, and social scientists. Recommended. CHOICE This book is the first attempt to systematically categorize this growing body of scholarship...this literature review is...substantial. American Reference Books Annual Downing, Nichols, and Webster (all library specialists from the U. of Michigan) offer a compilation of books, articles, websites, documentaries, films, and videos to help researchers more easily locate information on interracial issues. The annotated listings are thematically grouped into chapters on "hot button" issues, core historical literature, politics, dating and marriage, families, adoption, books for children and young adults, identity development, race and queer sexuality, and American motion pictures. The text also includes general information on teaching an interracial issues course, a sample full syllabus and reading list of a course on interracial issues taught by a sociology professor at the U. of Michigan, library research aids, and a glossary of terms. Reference and Research Book News This collection of fourteen essays explores personal, family, and social aspects of inter-race relations...Possible recommendation for professional collection. -- D. Jane Miller, Brewer HS Librarian/WSISD Library Coordinator…mehr
