Rhys Ford est née et a grandi à Hawaï avant de s'en éloigner pour découvrir le monde. Après avoir dévoré des piles de livres, beaucoup de nourritures bizarres et un ou deux petits amis parasites, Rhys a fini par se poser à San Diego qui est certes un endroit très agréable, mais qui a sérieusement besoin de plus de pluie. Rhys admet partager sa maison avec trois chats, un loulou de Poméranie noir, un petit lévrier irlandais et un cairn terrier roux terroriste. Rhys est également soumise à l'entretien d'une Pontiac Firebird 1979, d'un ordinateur portable Qosmio et d'une cafetière rouge Hamilton Beach.
