Autorenporträt
Gene Cho is a Regents Professor at the College of Music, University of North Texas, where his principal instructional duty is in music theory. However, as a holder of five academic degrees in various disciplines, and with a wide-range cultural and linguistic backgrounds and personal pursuits, he is also a composer, conductor, church musician, ethno-musicologist, cultural historian, and a scientist in his own right. His unique strength rests in his unyielding stance of holistic approach to learning, whether the study is in music, religion, history, science, or, here, ethnomusicology. In this small publication, he puts forth his honest and uncompromising beliefs on how the non-Western music-and Asian music in particular-should be taught, differing from the approach that has not changed in any substantive way for over a century. With this publication, he hopes to stimulate an open dialogue with his colleagues, all toward arriving at a better realization of the truer significance of 'diversity' in education.
