Born in Rostov-on-Don in Czarist Russia, Savielly Tartakower became one of the great chessplayers of his era. He played exciting, non-theoretical, bold chess in a time when conservative theoretical dogma held sway. One of the early proponents of the Hypermodern School of Chess, he also is recognized as one of the great chess authors of all time.
