Urgunge Onon has published widely on Mongol life, including his translation of the thirteenth-century epic The Secret History of the Mongols: The Life and Times of Chinggis Khan (2001). In 1985 he retired from the University of Leeds where he had headed the Mongolian Studies Programme for many years, and became a life member of Clare Hall, Cambridge, and General Manager of the university's newly-formed Mongolia and Inner Asia Studies Unit (MIASU). In 1992, in recognition of his distinguished academic career, he was awarded the rare distinction of an Honorary Professorship by the Mongolian State University.
