"In Another Life, Ali Habash turns from newspaper reporter to poet, to give us the stories we never hear about Iraq-- the stories of the heart. Here we find the toll that war takes on dreams, on children, on love and marriage. Here we find the terror of those who stay and the emptiness of those who go: exiles uprooted from the meaning of their lives--the sad plight of millions today. For them, the poet says, the heart is "nothing but a pump for blood." In this collection, Ali's poignant short lyrics lead, like tributary streams, into the urgent flood of the title poem. In "Another Life," though "poetry loses its bloody battles," it refuses to die--and thus gives us hope it may someday win the war. Dan Veach American poet and editor of Atlanta Review
