Nurpeis Baiganin, a renowned Kazakh akyn, was born in the Aktobe region in 1860. Nurpeis developed a deep interest in playing the dombra and singing folk tunes at a young age. This interest was so strong in the young vocalist that he quickly earned the nicknames 'singer boy,' 'dombra boy,' and 'storyteller boy'.Nurpeis, possessed an amazing memory, and eagerly listened to the best akyns of his time or their closest students, and memorized and sang their works by heart. His performing repertoire was filled at a young age with the songs and legends of the Western Kazakh akyns Abyl, Baitok, Sherniyaz, and Nurym, a fiery agitator and rebel leader Makhambet.
