The narrative mode (also known as the mode of narration) is the set of methods the author of a literary, theatrical, cinematic, or musical story uses to convey the plot to the audience. The collection of all narrative modes in order to construct a complete narrative is also called the narration (the process of creating the narrative); the terms are sometimes differentiated. It encompasses several overlapping areas of concern, most importantly narrative point-of-view, which determines whose perspective the story is viewed through (the first, second, or third person's); narrative voice, which determines how the story is verbally expressed to the audience; and narrative tense, which determines whether the story occurs in the past, present, or future.
