The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory develops and operates high magnetic field facilities that scientists use for basic research in physics, biology, bioengineering, chemistry, geochemistry, biochemistry, materials science, and engineering. Every year, about 1,000 visiting scientists (called "users") use the magnets at no cost. The lab is supported by the National Science Foundation and the State of Florida. It is the only facility of its kind in the United States and one of only nine in the world. It is the world's largest and highest powered magnet laboratory.
