Formaba parte de ella Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, uno de los cuatro sobrevivientes de la aventura. Naufracios es un relato autobiográfico que narra los sucesos vividos por este hombre, con abundancia de datos y descripciones que dejaron un legado para las posteriores expediciones. Esta obra describe la inversión de papeles que aconteció de conquistadores a conquistados, y de dominantes a dominados. El autor da muestra de una nueva realidad, diferente a las antiguas descripciones de las ciudades de oro que hacía Cristóbal Colón, con más objetividad que la mayoría de los otros cronistas que describieron el ahora llamado "encuentro de dos mundos".
