Conducted as a qualitative study, the study utilized two focus groups comprised of teenagers aged between 14 and 19 years old from rural Thika District, Kenya. The two groups, which had ten participants each, were divided into female and male who were interviewed in two separate meetings.

Kuria C. Githiora was born and grew up in Mang'u, Kenya. He holds a B.A. in Communications from Slippery Rock University of PA. and a doctorate in English from Michigan State University. He's a lecturer at the American Ethnic Studies Dept., University of Washington in Seattle. He lives with his family in Des Moines, Washington.
