Meanwhile, Theresa experiences a bout of recklessness when she allows another young woman to stay with her and get carried away with shopping. She eventually realizes she is a taker and ousts her, but eventually finds another on-again off-again same sex friend in Laurie, who markets a product to help with mobility which Travis can eventually use. But he succumbs to the effects rapidly and dies within a year or so after onset. The theme of someone or something being needed now runs concurrently throughout the story.
