Nestin, a cancer stem cell marker has been studied intensively in various human cancers and found to be a reliable bio-marker of carcinogenesis. In addition, nestin is found to be an effective neoangiogenesis marker that selectively detects the new blood vessel formation due to tumor. However, the exact role of nestin in oral cancer is less researched. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the role of nestin in the initiation and progression of oral squamous carcinoma. Nestin expression was evaluated both in the keratinocytes and blood vessels using immunohistochemical and western blot techniques. The study samples included normal oral mucosa, oral leukoplakia and oral squamous cell carcinoma cases. Based on various comparisons & statistical findings, this study confirm nestin to be an effective marker of neoangiogenesis in oral cancer & an early marker in oral carcinogenesis.
